This is the smaller version of the regular Utila 2.0 wallet. This is a very unique wallet; it can be used horizontally, vertically, or both ways. The 1.0 version of this wallet was already my most sold, and the 2.0 brings the same features from the first one, plus the addition of incredible features and aesthetics. The 1.0 did not have a Mini version, for the 2.0, I wished to introduced the same features in a smaller package, with only a few compromises. You can consider the regular Utila as a back pocket carry wallet and the Mini as a front pocket carry wallet.

What is New in 2.0 wallets overall

Front

The front now has a new look; instead of the sloped angle of the 1.0, the 2.0 comes with a rounded designed. This not only made the wallet prettier, but it also brought more secureness: by having this new round taller design, most currencies can be wrapped around in the horizontal pocket without showing the corner of the bills in the front. This change was inspired by customer feedback. Another thing that changed in the front: the cash divider piece now also hosts the flap making the wallet more beautiful because previously the front only hosted 1 color, now the wallet looks more elegant with two tones. Lastly two minor changes: stitching at the bottom have been increase to better host the bills in the inside compartment, and the Patepluma Logo has been moved to the front (it was in the back in the 1.0). Overall, I am very happy with the results.

Back

Instead of the sloped pocket in the back from the 1.0 version, the new quick access pocket was completely redesigned. This is something that gave me a lot of headaches. The previous pocket left cards too expose, and in line of production it was also hard to stitch. I tried many designs until I finally landed on this one. A different type of pocket, still quick access, practical. The new pocket is a side access compartment. Stitched on the top and on the right side of the wallet. The small opening on the top right corner allows the user to slide their cards out from right to left, while allowing only limited card exposure. The beauty of this design is that your cards are securely tucked-in, but just one swipe away…AND, the quick access works even when your wallet is facing you from the front. I also removed the logo from the back, bringing a clean look to this side.

Inside

Just behind the snap opening flap, a card slot was introduced in this version. This slot can also be seen as quick access depending on how you use your wallet. Because the slot is hidden behind the flaps, your cards remain hidden, but yet close to your finger tips.

The main compartment was kept the same in terms of capacity, just that now it also have the card slot on its front. In the previous version of this wallet, the vertical flap of this wallet was connected to the back side of this spacious compartment, not anymore. This allows cool features: 1) you can tuck-in the flap from the piece behind this pocket into this pocket and create an incredible safe main compartment. Safe enough to even host your coins, small items. 2) You could also use the flap over this compartment and tuck it just behind the snap button horizontal flap. This creates a different look but it also allows you to use the main compartment as a vertical access compartment, in which even standing USD size currency can fit vertically. 3) When tucking-in the flap into the main spacious compartment, a very secure compartment is created just behind the main compartment. This is spacious enough for like 3 cards, and it is side access. 4) One last crazy option: roll the flap back and tuck it it into the cash compartment. In this setting, you create a cash divider or a hidden pocket. Note that in this configuration, your main compartment will be left vertically expose. This is not my favorite configuration, but I did notice that it is also an option.

Cash Compartment

You will notice that the internal piece of leather in the front of this compartment comes with a curved small window in the top left. This was carefully thought about: it avoids showing that pocket in the front when rolled closed (avoiding making the front too busy). It also allows you to quickly see your cash when the wallet is open horizontally, and most importantly, it helps you fidget through the different bills with your finger tips without obstruction. Plus, I particularly liked the look as well. One last change to this compartment: it now comes with a small curve towards the bottom of the wallet. This allowed the wallet to remain squared and to release stresses on the wallet when closing it. And to be honest, it also looks more elegant this way.

For the Mini version, the Cash compartment is best when living in countries with bills up to 130mm wide. Otherwise, I recommend you to fold the bills behind the main compartment. The extra space of the entire compartment allows you to quickly see all your cash with ample room.

Specific to the Mini Version

The Mini is of course smaller so it does come with some compromises. These are: a tighter fit, therefore a bit less capacity. For example: in the regular Utila 2.0 you could carry up to 4 cards in the quick access back pocket. I recommend 2 cards in the smaller Mini (maybe 3 after the leather has stretched). And lastly, because the wallet is smaller, most currencies would have to be folded in halves. Unless you live in a country with smaller bills: Euro bills up to 50 bills can fit unfolded in the horizontal compartment, specially the 20, 10, 5 Euro bills. Unfolded standing bills in the vertical position is also not possible. In other words, if you dont mind folding your bills in halves, your Utila Mini is perfect for you.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, this wallet is popular specially because of the amount of options it can offer. I recommend watching my Youtube video on this wallet to visualize the features and functionality described above. Utila 1.0 was great but it was not for everyone, even if it was my most sold and very positively reviewed wallet. Utila 2.0 is a total upgrade. And if you think that you love it but it seems too large for you, checkout the Utila Mini, introduced also with this 2.0 version (same features, just smaller).

Capacity: Hard to say, enough. I personally carry 8 cards and 5 bills in it. It really depends if you use coins or not for example. But it carries enough for most users. The nice thing is that even if you carry less, the wallet doesn’t look odd, because it keeps its shape whether you carry a lot or little.

Leather Info: made of full grain, vegetable tanned leather from top Italian Tanneries. About 1.5mm thick.

Thread: 1mm waxed flat polyester threads.

Size: 73mm wide, 97mm tall, 17mm thick.
